Bedroom vs. Studio

My reasoning behind this blog is to let everyone know how technology has changed my life. If it wasn’t for my laptop I would’t be where I am to in the recording arts world. It is now cheaper then ever to purchase gear and even build a home studio. Growing up not as wealthy, really restricted my potential to create and produce music. Now I can just save up for a used Macbook and purchase a digital audio workstation and now I can do what I love. I know you can never get the same quality you get from a high end recording studio, but it definitely is close enough to get you where you want to go in this industry.

With the ability to now create, recreate, and share sounds from your Macbook. Expensive studios are not as necessary as they use to be. LA Times states, "Although nobody officially tracks the number of recording studios, the consensus among industry experts is that the big commercial facilities have taken a major hit. They estimate that as many as half of the L.A. area's commercial studios have closed or been sold to artists for private use." Now these days people can record sounds or make music straight from their laptop, with a microphone. Instead of throwing millions of dollars on a high end studio, you could build your own home studio for just a fraction of the cost and can still have almost the same functionality, if build and structured correctly. To have a basic home studio you’ll need a computer, DAW, monitors, headphones, microphone and some mic cables. You can use educational videos such as Lynda or YouTube to learn how to set everything up, and every year you can save up money to buy additional gear to make your studio even that much better. Using websites like sweetwater.com will allow one to expand ones studio for a low price. Even though the use of hardware gear is unbeatable, the opportunities that plug-ins bring to the table are a great substitute for most high end gear.

So even though a big studio might bring a certain feeling, vibe, and great gear, it’s definitely not a necessity to produce a grammy. With only a DAW, laptop and quality headphones, somebody has the ability to create professional products for an extremely manageable price.
